One of the things I help clients with is identifying their ideal client. How important is this? A marketing ploy to waste your time or essential so you understand your clients?
I think its important to dispel some myths first.
1) There is a difference between an Ideal Client and an Ideal Paying Client. Ensure you know the difference and market accordingly
2) Your IPC will evolve over the years so spend time reviewing and reflecting on your business so you can adapt your offering when needed
3) It doesn’t have to be perfect, some people spend so long trying to ensure their IPC is perfect that they forget to go out there, market and sell
So why bother working on a IPC?
Understanding more about your clients helps you create marketing that is aligned to them. You want them to connect with you and feel you are speaking directly to them. Understanding what their pain points are and how it is YOU can help them.
It doesn’t mean you won’t have other clients
Although understanding your IPC means you create content tailored to them, it doesn’t mean you won’t also attract other clients. And thats ok.
For example when working as an event planner I specialised in marquee weddings and parties. Thus my marketing was tailored around this. But, occasionally I was also hired for events being held at venues. I still took the jobs on. And the events were still amazing. Just because they were not 100% my IPC there were still many aspects that were aligned with my values, still traits that were found in my IPC clients.
So yes do work on your IPC but understand it doesn’t have to be perfect to bring the sales in.
Who is a typical client for me?
I work with a range of businesses but primarily in the wedding and creative industries. A typical client is incredibly talented at what they do, their creativity and passion is beautiful to watch. But they struggle with choosing which idea to promote, which one will bring them joy and profit? Having ideas is never the issue, itโs which one to sell and what method to use.
They LOVE what they do and ADORE their clients. But being typical people pleasers they often over promise and over deliver to the detriment of their availability and profitability.
As is typical in the creative industry, my clients are often soul led, introverted entrepreneurs who are fabulously talented but struggle with what is needed in order to scale. As an introvert myself I share techniques to show up confidently but in a way that feels aligned to their soul.
I believe strongly that in order to scale you need to work in your zone of genius, what brings you joy and lights your soul? Once this is aligned you will master not only the strategy but your mindset as well. The framework I use works on all 3 areas.
