One thing that comes up again and again with business owners is the fear of showing up on social media.
They know visibility matters. They know potential clients want to see the person behind the business. But when it comes to actually posting a photograph, recording a video or going live, confidence can suddenly disappear.
And here’s the thing: you don’t have to become a naturally confident person before you start showing up online.
Confidence often comes because you start showing up.
I understand however that for some of you showing up online is daunting and scary but with some small tips you can increase your visibility.
In this article I will share ways you can build on your confidence so showing up online becomes more natural.

You Don’t Have to Share Everything to Build a Personal Brand
Showing up online doesn’t mean sharing your entire life.
You decide what is public and what remains private.
Your children might be completely off limits. You might not want to show your home. You may prefer not to discuss relationships, family or personal circumstances.
That’s absolutely fine.
Being visible doesn’t mean being exposed.
You can build trust by sharing your expertise, opinions, personality, behind-the-scenes moments and experience without giving people access to every part of your personal life.
In fact, particularly if you work with high-value clients or operate in a premium market, knowing what not to share can be just as important as knowing what to share.
The goal isn’t to become an open book.
The goal is to become recognisable, relatable and trusted.
I Didn’t Feel Confident. I Just Started Acting Like I Was
I think thereโs a misconception that you have to feel confident before you can snap that selfie, post to Stories or go live. The truth is, sometimes you just have to act confident before you feel it.
Yes, the whole โfake it till you make itโ idea comes into play. But let me tell you a little story about how I did exactly that throughout my corporate career in my early twenties.
As a child and into adulthood, I would go red if anyone spoke to me. It still happens occasionally, which frankly is embarrassing!
When I worked at a TV production company, I remember being so nervous, shaking and going redder than a tomato whenever we hosted an industry soirรฉe with some of the TV industry’s top executives.
Until one day I thought, ENOUGH.
I told myself to pretend I was confident. To ignore any physical signs of nervousness and carry on talking to the person in front of me, regardless of how much I was blushing.
And guess what?
The world didn’t end.
The commissioning editors didn’t stand there and laugh at me. Nobody cared as much as I thought they would.
I was okay.
And that’s when my confidence began to bloom. Slowly and steadily over the years.
It didn’t change overnight. I still sometimes get sweaty palms before going live or presenting on stage. But by facing my fears and pushing through the discomfort, the panic subsided and my confidence grew.
You don’t necessarily become confident and then take action. Sometimes you take the action first, and the confidence follows.
So let’s look at some of the ways you can become more confident showing up on social media โ whether that’s sharing a photo, recording a video or going live.
Stop Thinking About Yourself. Start Thinking About Your Client.
When you’re worrying about how you look, sound or come across, it’s very easy to make social media all about you.
Instead, ask yourself: What does my client need from me today?
What question can I answer? What problem can I help them solve? What could I explain? What could I reassure them about?
When you shift the focus from โWhat will people think of me?โ to โHow can I help them?โ, showing up becomes much easier.
Your social media isn’t an audition. It’s an opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge, experience and perspective your clients are paying you for.
Remember How Awesome YOU Are
Why you? Take some time to remember how talented you are. Regardless of whether new to business or a pro. Make a list of the reasons why you rock at what you do. Where is your zone of genius? What to you excel at?

Imposter Syndrome / Being Imperfect
Imposter Syndrome is a real issue and often the cause of lack of confidence. You’ll be ready to go live then boom think of a competitor triggering self doubt. You panic about making a mistake and start overthinking your outfit, location and if your message is good enough. Just remember your audience doesn’t care about perfectionism and if anything they appreciate seeing you real and “normal”. Think about accounts you connect with online, are you judging them or their home? Do you snigger if they make a mistake? What about all those little “ums”?
Remember that competitor you are comparing yourself to might have been going live for 12 months so are now a seasoned pro. The difference is they โstartedโ.
Getting Confident on Stories
If you havenโt posted anything on stories yet then this is just for you. Start by sharing a branded photo of you, then step it up by posting a selfie, perhaps at your computer? Then pop outside and record your voice over nature to get used to hearing your voice. Once comfortable with this record a short video giving advice to clients.
Getting Confident on LIVE
So many people panic about going live. Despite being an introvert this is something I did pretty regularly for years and although I find it easy now it certainly wasnโt when I went live the first time (on facebook). Now you are more likely to see me on TikTok and Reels and not live so much.
Prepare beforehand, sounds obvious but have a purpose for going live. What is it you want to talk about? Draft some key points beforehand. Be prepared for zero or very low views as many will watch the replay. Thus donโt forget to speak to them when live. Donโt keep the focus just on those joining you live. Add some CTA for both live and replays, like, comment, add an emoji, head into my DMโs
Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail
We’ve all heard the expression, “fail to plan, plan to fail“, get into the habit of planning your social media content. What are your priorities this month? What are the key messages you want to share? Are there any key moments you can share behind the scenes footage? Perhaps you creating? Visiting a venue? Having a plan is half the battler and stops you sinking into panic mode of not knowing what to talk about. Before recording any video or going live write down the key points you want to get across. I put my thoughts on a small whiteboard and have near my camera to act as a prompt.
Consistency over Frequency
The last thing I want to remind you is consistency is key, theres no point showing up every day solid for a week only to go incognito for a month. As a coach I’ve seen clients do this and it can be so frustrating, they will be doing fantastically well, gaining traction and increasing their network then boom they seem to ghost their audience until the next time. Better to show up once a week without fail than sporadically showing up.
You Can Be Confident Without Being Salesy
You don’t need to turn every Instagram post into a sales pitch.
But you also don’t need to hide your expertise because you’re worried about appearing โtoo salesyโ.
Share. Educate. Inspire. Show your personality. Demonstrate your expertise. Tell people how you work. Answer the questions your ideal clients are asking.
And yes, sell.
People can’t buy from you if they don’t understand what you offer.
The more consistently you demonstrate your knowledge and the results of your experience, the easier it becomes to talk about your services with confidence.
The aim isn’t to sell constantly.
It’s to make selling a natural part of showing people how you can help.

Frequently Asked Questions About Confidence on Social Media
How can I become more confident on social media?
Start by taking small, manageable steps rather than waiting until you feel completely confident. Share a photograph, record a short Story, answer a common client question or create a short video. Confidence tends to grow through repeated action and experience.
Why am I scared to show my face on social media?
Fear of judgement, comparison, perfectionism and worrying about what other people think are all common reasons business owners hesitate to show up online. Remember that being visible doesn’t mean sharing everything about your personal life. You can choose your boundaries and still build a strong personal brand.
Do I need to show my face on social media to build a personal brand?
No. Showing your face can help people connect with the person behind a business, but it isn’t the only way to build trust. Your expertise, opinions, knowledge, voice and client experience can all contribute to a strong personal brand.
How can I be confident on camera?
Prepare a few key points before recording, but don’t try to memorise every word. Start with short videos and gradually increase the length as you become more comfortable. Remember that your audience is usually far more interested in what you can help them with than whether you look or sound perfect.
How often should I show up on social media?
Choose a posting rhythm you can realistically maintain. Consistency doesn’t mean posting every day. Showing up once a week consistently is generally more useful than posting heavily for a few days and then disappearing for weeks.
